Share the Joy: Happy New Year

Image
It's time for festivities and celebration. . . .  the end of one year and the beginning of another. As for me, I'll eschew the crowds and alcohol and curl up to watch episodes of "Call the Midwife" (a BBC series set in London's West End tenements in the late 1950s -- you can find it on Netflix) and drink Snapple. I know, pretty boring, eh? The simplest things bring me joy. What about you?  How are you cultivating joy?  Celebrate it. Share the Joy: Good Tidings

Christmas is fast approaching. The presents are bought and waiting to be claimed. The weather is crisp and cold, with snow in the mountains. And so, I wish you good tidings of comfort and JOY and to the World, I send a prayer for peace. How are you cultivating joy?  Celebrate it. Share the Joy: Field Trip

One of my favorite jaunts anytime of year is a trip to Seattle's Pike Place Market. I took little sightseers with me and while they weren't too keen on having to pose for a picture, they warmed up to cups of hot cider and getting to pick any donut they wanted out of the bakery case. You can just see the urn full of mulled cider in the right lower corner of the photo below. We perused the vendors, looking for interesting things to buy like this very unusual broccoli  (cut off the individual florets and the tips, toss in olive oil, and roast at 400F for 20 minutes). From the same stall, we bought rainbow carrots before meandering by the pepper wreaths. I was moved to capture this image of pomegranates, mostly because I recently reread Traveling with Pomegranates (by Sue Monk Kidd and her daughter Ann Kidd Taylor) but also because it brought back the joy of breakfasts in the dining room on the da

It's cold enough here that I'm checking the hummingbird feeders to make sure they aren't frozen. . . . . because the hummingbirds are frequent visitors. And I'm a little late in posting today because my son and I went to a movie while my Volvo was getting a new headlight and its electrical system checked for a short. Here's what we saw --- and we both loved and enJOYed it enormously. I just love, love, love going to movies, especially at our local non-profit movie theater that showing indie films. It's a total treasure and always brings me joy when I visit. The free popcorn for members is always great, too. How are you cultivating joy?  Celebrate it. It's cool-ish and rainy here, a great time for cuddling up under a quilt and having a good read. Reading always gives me joy. I love wandering through a thicket of words, wondering at the beauty of language, its ability to capture emotion, build suspense, and tell a good yarn. How are you cultivating joy?  Celebrate it. It's out of the old house and into the new. Bye bye home that sheltered me so well for 16 years. You did a great job, and I'm ready to let you go to be loved by someone new. Share the Joy: Almost There

Closing on the house I'm selling was delayed a couple of days (until tomorrow) but I'm almost there. The furniture got moved yesterday. I have a TON of artwork and art supplies still to move, plus lots of odds and ends. It feels never-ending, this packing up a load and driving to the new house and wondering where to put things, but it has to be finished by Saturday when I turn over the keys to the new owners. I'm totally exhausted but full of joy that I'm turning the page on a new chapter in my very rich, friend-filled, beautiful life. How are you cultivating joy?  Celebrate it. I'm excited to announce that closing on the sale of my house will be early next week, either Tuesday or Wednesday. Yippee! I'm beginning to focus on the new house while packing up dishes and pots and pans, books, towels, mops and brooms, and lots of art and art supplies from the old house. It's time to  of my deep sense of "home" with the old house and make the new digs my home, both physically and emotionally. It's also time to get serious about paring down the stuff, as there's not room to hang on to things like there was in the old house,  which was almost twice the size of the new, more modest home. What I don't have room for will find new homes,  so I'm happy about that. How are you cultivating joy?  Celebrate it.
