Share the Joy: Simple Pleasures

Image
It's truly simple things that bring us joy. The warm pleasure of a foamy cup of chai latte sipped from a favorite cup. A novel on my Kindle.... most recently Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks (I know - a cheery subject, right?) The sun streaming through freshly cleaned windows on a weekday morning. Walking in the yard of my new house  and beginning to put my imprint on the garden in ways large and small. My landscape guru installed the beautiful fountain I treated myself to, but I haven't yet taken a pic of it.  It's sitting in the front porch garden opposite the front door to create a sense of peace in all who enter. Then we added some ferns around the base and mulched the area. We also added some colorful grasses and Heavenly Bamboo shrubs in strategic locations. I'm taking joy in learning about deer resistant planting while reminding myself that it's not...

Share the Joy: Back in the Saddle Again

With the plethora of tasks associated with selling one house (please sell soon) and buying another, a lot of stuff got put on the back burner. Art got ditched in favor of packing. Blogging and even more serious writing  was ignored and organizing was prioritized. But it gives me great joy to know that I'm returning to the creative well and taking a big long drink. Yesterday I made my first Polyvore collage in the last month. It felt incredibly freeing to let go of all the "have to's" and do something just for the pure pleasure of it. So what pushed your joy button this week? Notice joy. Cultivate it. Celebrate it. Joy is  having my kids work their tails off to make sure my house was ready to show. (Thanks, y'all!) Knowing that Deb's online class and a month of fun is about to begin. Vases full of sunflowers. A treat of a soft, squishy caramel from a little store in the historic center of Gig Harbor and sitting down for a read of the book about Edward Curtis by Timothy Eagan even though there's a million things that need doing.  What gave you JOY this week?  Notice joy. This week's joys are simple: 1. sleeping until 7:30 this morning, after a week of waking up at 5:30 or so and getting right to work on the task of getting my house show-ready 2. getting used to my Kindle and taking a little time to read 3. anticipating Girls' Night tomorrow to see Sister Act onstage in Seattle. When this selling-my-house-and-moving stuff is over,  I want to do a lot of this except I know I'll have to unpack and  find a place for everything. Still. . . . I can dream. Share the Joy: A Little of This

My joy moments this week include chubby cheeks and blue eyes appreciating moments of rapt concentration and making progress toward getting the house on the market. The main floor is staged. The upstairs is close. I've got to move the art stuff and holiday decor from the basement storage area to the new house. But I can now envision the results of massive effort. Then there will be the new house to put together. But I won't think about that. What gave you JOY this week?  Notice joy. Cultivate it. Celebrate it. Share the Joy: More Art (Bo Choi)

Perhaps I'm easy to please,  but I found some joy in discovery. Discovery of a new-to-me artist (and apparently a fashion designer, too) who created work for the city of Seattle to beautify a construction area. Bo Choi's work has a sense of urban decay and the inclusion of unexpected beauty. There's a hint of celebration that I can't quite put my finger on. There's a liveliness  and sense of movement -- a twirling a letting go an assertion of feminine power through personal expression. And the pops of in-your-face pink are just divine.
