A Little Bit of Fluff

Image
Today I'm not into heaviness and gloom, despite the chill and low-hanging clouds. I've got a yen for froth and fluffiness. Not Much to Say

Image
I've been writing up a storm the past few days. I thought for certain I'd have lots to say in my blog post today, but no such luck. There are several new poems, but they're all pretty long so I hesitate to post them. Instead, after I'd looked at what blog friends were doing, I headed out on a field trip to enjoy the sunshine. Sometimes images say things better than words.

Early Morning Reverie

Image
I was up early this morning. It's something I do now. I've learned to love the quiet of the morning, when the dog and cats are fed and watered and are content to leave me to my thoughts. This morning, I sat in my little computer nook on the second floor, reading emails and catching up on blog posts while watching the sky outside my window turn red-violet, then amethyst. It finally settled into a faint pink near the ground that graduated through the lavender range over to blue, growing faintly more intense as I looked up-up-up, but still a soft, soft powdery blue of a still morning, just after sunrise. I should have grabbed the camera early on, gone outside in the 30-something temperature and taken a photo to show you the glory of Mother Nature's paintbox. But I didn't -- I knew that by the time I pulled jeans on under my nightgown so I wouldn't scandalize my very-Republican neighbors if they happened to glance up to my deck, by the time...

Earth Magic

Image
a chill, quiet morning near the sea the scent of salt water and sea grasses white clouds dancing airy waltzes, seagull dance band playing a song I sip my steaming spicy chai, steam escaping through the vents in my travel mug. gravel lying atop the rough roadway crunches under my feet. I am alone with all the glory of nature for company. Earth magic.

Contradictions

Image
The day was so splendid, so warm, with white puffy clouds pasted into the blue, blue sky that I ventured out into my garden to enjoy the little piece of paradise I've created with lots of help from Mother Nature. As I rounded the corner of my house and started down the path of granite stepping stones, I noticed my feet moving from one stone to another and I thought to myself, "I am traveling on a sacred path." "Everything is part of the Divine." "Everything is Sacred." I was feeling quite satisfied with my exalted self (well, at least my inflated sense of it). And then, Coyote just had to serve me a dose of contradiction and comeuppance. "Look here," said Coyote, pointing with his rainbow paw and shining a laser-light on my tender young hostas. And I followed his gesture with my eyes. And there, I saw HOLES in my beautiful, finely-veined hostas. Incontrovertible evidence that a slug was dining in my garden. How dare that...

Dancing with Inevitable Change

Image
In the desert, change is nurtured even in stone by wind, by water, through time. - Terry Tempest Williams Mother Nature has her way with the landscape. Whether water trickles in measured drops or comes in torrents, eventually it carves changes into stone, in the outlines of seacoasts, in the course of a river. Wind can level cities, form delicate arches in layers of rock, and create beautiful ripples in the sand. The power of one of the earth's plates ramming itself under another can create mountains where none existed. Massive forces building inside a volcano eventually find release, whether in swarms of earthquakes, expulsion of gases and steam, pyroclastic flows,  or outright  explosion. Change happens, whether in infinitesimally small increments or cataclysmic shifts, whether or not we like it. Photo copyright 2006 - Trevor Ducken a/k/a TREVERI Used with permission. And so it is with us.  With the passage of time, we change.  We grow o...

Nature's Paintbox

Image
Here's what I didn't see last week but found yesterday: the colors unearthed after a few warm, sunny days. Broad swaths of color. Rows and rows of tulips dancing and swaying in the gentle breeze. Nature's paintbox arrayed in all its splendor. A vista that commanded you to STOP pay attention take in the beauty all around you. What colors your world today? What makes you pause, focus, and devote your full attention to the beauty that surrounds you?
